How Range knows it's you
Range has no visitor accounts or passwords. When you finish the quiz, your result lives at its own private link, and only someone with that link can open it.
Your browser also holds a short-lived token that lets you attach an email to a result or change your answers. Since there is no password, your result stays private for as long as you keep its link to yourself.
What we collect
You can browse most of Range without giving us anything. We collect data only when you take one of these actions:
- Take the quiz. We store your answers, the profile we build from them, and a random token that lets you reopen your result.
- Sign up for job alerts. We store your email address and send you new roles as they come in.
- Join the early-access list. If you add your email to the upcoming-platform card, we store it to tell you when the next version of Range opens. This is a separate signup from job alerts, and neither is tied to your quiz result.
- Use the contact form. We store your name, message, and email address so we can reply, and delete them on the schedule below.
- Visit any page. Our analytics records page views, the referring link, an anonymous session ID, your IP address, and the rough location derived from it. The IP is used for location, bot filtering, and rate limiting, never to identify you.
We never ask for sensitive personal information such as government IDs, financial details, or health data.
Who Range is for
Range is built for working adults. It is not intended for children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 16. If you think a child has sent us their details, email us and we will delete them.
Personalized insights
Parts of your result are generated for you rather than pulled from a template. To write your career insights and the “why you fit” note on a role, we send your quiz answers and the relevant job details to a third-party text-generation service.
That service uses the data only to produce your result, and does not use it to train its models. We send only what the feature needs, never your email or anything that identifies you by name.
Who else sees your data
We do not sell your data, and we never share it with advertisers.
Running Range takes a handful of outside services, and each one sees only the slice of data it needs to do its job:
- Analytics: anonymous page views and clicks that show how the site is used. Form inputs are masked, so we do not record what you type.
- Email delivery: the address and contents of any email we send you, so it reaches your inbox.
- Hosting and storage: runs the app and securely holds quiz answers, results, any email you give us, and routine server logs.
- Text generation: the quiz answers and job details needed to write your insights, which are not used to train its models.
- Error monitoring: technical reports of server faults (what broke and where), with result links stripped of their tokens. It never receives your email, your IP, or your quiz answers.
We give each provider the minimum it needs, and nothing more.
Where your data is handled
Range and the services above run on infrastructure in the United States, and in some cases other countries. Wherever you live, using Range means your data may be processed in the US and abroad. We work only with providers that agree to protect it to a standard comparable to the law where you live.
Cookies & local storage
Range stores a little data in your browser, and this is separate from cookies.
In local storage we keep your in-progress quiz answers so a refresh does not lose them, a link to your latest result, and the short-lived token that lets you claim or edit that result.
We also set a small number of first-party cookies: one for analytics to count unique visitors. We do not use third-party advertising cookies.
How we measure traffic
Analytics runs both in your browser and on our server. On the server we separate real visitors from bots so our counts stay accurate: we take your IP address and browser details, combine them, and convert them into a one-way hash for counting and bot detection. Browser-side, our analytics tool records your IP address with each event and derives a rough location from it. In both places the IP serves location, bot filtering, and rate limiting. We never use it to identify you.
How long we keep it
We keep quiz answers and any attached email for as long as the product is live, so your result is there if you come back. Contact-form messages stay until the conversation is closed, then up to 12 months for context. Analytics events follow our analytics tool's standard retention period. You can ask us to delete any of this at any time.
How we protect it
We protect your data with encryption in transit, tight access limits so only the people who run Range can reach it, and providers chosen for their security record. No system is ever completely secure. If a breach affects your data, we will act quickly, tell you, and notify the relevant authority where the law requires it.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you can email us and ask to:
- See what data we hold about you, and get a copy to take elsewhere.
- Correct anything that is wrong.
- Delete your quiz result, an email signup, or your contact-form message.
- Object to or limit how we use your data, and withdraw any consent you gave.
- Unsubscribe from any of our emails. Every list email also has a one-click unsubscribe link at the bottom.
Asking costs nothing and changes nothing about how we treat you. We respond within the time your local law allows, and within a month where no specific limit applies.
In Europe and the UK, we rely on your consent for emails and quiz results, and on our legitimate interest in running and improving Range for basic analytics. In California, we do not sell or share your personal information, and never have. If we cannot resolve a concern, you can raise it with your local data-protection or privacy authority.
Changes to this policy
If the way we handle your data changes in a meaningful way, we will update this page and its date. The current version is the one that applies.
